Spread the love

Sourdough bread sandwich recipe has become my favourite recipe during this winter. It makes a perfect sandwich for breakfast.

Sourdough bread sandwich can also be enjoyed at lunch time and at dinner time.

This low calorie sourdough bread sandwich can be paired with soups such as tomato basil soup and a creamy mushroom soup. You can also pair it with grilled portobello mushrooms, olive tapenade, hummus, and roasted vegetables.

What is a sourdough bread?

Sourdough bread is an ancient staple. Sourdough bread traces its origins back thousands of years, with its roots deeply embedded in the natural fermentation of flour and water.

The fermentation process, driven by wild yeast and lactic acid bacteria present in the environment, creates the distinct tangy flavor and characteristic airy texture of sourdough bread.

How to make a sourdough bread

The fundamental essence of sourdough lies in its starter, a living culture of wild yeast and bacteria.

This starter, often referred to as “levain” or “mother dough,” requires regular feeding with a mixture of flour and water to sustain its activity and ensure the bread’s successful rise.

The unique microorganisms present in the starter contribute not only to the bread’s leavening but also to its distinctive flavor profile.

The process of crafting sourdough bread involves a careful balance of ingredients, fermentation, and precise techniques.

Mixing flour, water, and the starter initiates the dough, followed by a series of folds, rests, and shaping to develop its gluten structure and encourage fermentation.

The dough is then proofed before baking, often in a hot, steamy environment, resulting in a beautifully crusty exterior and a soft, airy interior.

Ingredients

  • Bread flour
  • Lukewarm water
  • Active sourdough starter
  • Salt

INSTRUCTIONS

Mix the ingredients

Start by mixing the active sourdough starter with lukewarm water in a mixing bowl. Add the bread flour as you stir. Once it has formed a shaggy dough, cover with a wet washcloth and set it aside for 30 minutes. Sprinkle salt over the dough and kneed for about 10 minutes. Set it aside for 30 minutes.

Fermentation

Perform a series of stretch and folds every 30 minutes for the next 2-3 hours, allowing the dough to ferment and rise. After fermentation, shape your loaf into your desired shapes. Let it site for 2 hours until it rises to a double size.

Bake the bread

Preheat the oven to 450°F (232°C) with a Dutch oven inside. Once heated, carefully transfer the dough into the hot Dutch oven, cover it, and bake for 20 minutes. Then, remove the lid and bake for an additional 20-25 minutes until the crust turns golden brown. Slice the bread once it has cooled off.

  1. Can any type of sourdough bread be used for sandwiches?

Yes, sourdough bread generally works well for sandwiches due to its tangy flavor and sturdy texture.

  2. How do I prevent my sourdough bread from becoming too soggy in a sandwich?

Toasting the sourdough slices lightly can create a protective barrier against moisture from the fillings. Additionally, spreading a thin layer of butter or mayonnaise on the bread before adding moist ingredients can help prevent sogginess.

  3. What are some recommended fillings for sourdough bread sandwiches?

Sourdough pairs well with a variety of fillings. Consider using a combination of cheeses (cheddar, Swiss, etc.), sliced tomatoes, lettuce, avocado, deli meats (smoked turkey, ham, roast beef), grilled vegetables, or even egg-based fillings like scrambled eggs or omelets.

  4. Can I freeze sourdough bread for sandwiches?

Yes, sourdough bread can be frozen for later use. Wrap individual slices or the loaf tightly in plastic wrap or aluminum foil, place them in an airtight container or freezer bag, and freeze. To use, thaw the bread at room temperature or in a toaster.

  5. What are the health benefits of sourdough bread?

Sourdough fermentation can enhance the bioavailability of nutrients in bread, potentially making it easier for the body to absorb minerals like calcium, magnesium, and zinc. Some people also find sourdough easier to digest due to its prebiotic and probiotic properties.
